Abstract

Selection of types of cardiac prosthesis remains controversial. Between Sept. 1980 and July 1986, 101 patients underwent single aortic (N=14) and mistral valve replacement (N=47). Clinical results were compared between biological and mechanical valve.
Results were as follows;
1. Biological valves were used in 56 patients and mechanical valves in 45 patients.
2. The Ionescu-Shiley bovine pericardial xenograft was most commonly used of biological valves and St. Jude medical, Bjork-Shiley and Medtronic Hall valves were almost equally used of mechanical valves.
3. The most common cause of valve replacement was valvular incompetence in MVR (45%) and AVR (57%).
4. Postoperative complications were developed in 63 cases and the most common one was simple wound infection (23 cases).
5. The postoperative mortality rate was 10.9% (in MVR 9.2%, in AVR 21.4%).
6. Causes of death were low cardiac output syndrome (4cases), ventricular arrhythmia (3 cases) and major bleeding (2 cases).
